The Strange Gentleman ? by Charles Dickens (1836) Foreword The farce [The Strange Gentleman] I also did as a sort of practical joke, for Harley, whom I have known a long time. It was funny?adapted from one of the published sketches called the gGreat Winglebury Duel,h and was published by Chapman and Hall. But I have no copy of it now, nor should I think they have. But both these things were done without the least consideration or regard to reputation. | I wouldn't repeat them for a thousand pounds apiece, and devoutly wish them to be forgotten. ? Dickensians will probably never forget The Strange Gentleman, and indeed Dickensians will probably never forget any of Dickensfs work. In that respect we are an elephantine lot. Those of us who admire Dickensfs work, admire it a lot, and we are sometimes in the paradoxical position of having to disregard one of the authorfs wishes, with regrets, in order to read a little more of the work we admire so much. With this apologia is here presented Dickensfs first-produced play. First a little background on the creation of The Strange Gentleman. As Dickens notes above, the play was based on gThe Great Winglebury Duelh, one of the Sketches by Boz. Dickens wrote gDuelh in October 1835, and expected it to go into the Monthly Magazine for December. Instead, it appeared as one of the three previously-unpublished stories included when the Sketches were first collected in book form (First Series, 8 Feb 1836). In the meantime, something important had happened. George Hogarth, Dickensfs soon-to-be father-in-law, had made an important connection for Dickens, and had interested a theatrical producer in the authorfs unfinished first play?The Village Coquettes. Dickens quickly completed Coquettes, around the end of January, and apparently continued right on to Strange Gentleman. By 18 Feb he was offering Gentleman to his Pickwick publishers, Chapman and Hall, and the script was likely finished by that time. Chapman and Hall eventually published the playbook, without music, in Dec 1836 or Jan 1837.Dickens accepted ?30 for the playfs acting copyright from producer Braham (25 Aug 1836). The Village Coquettes had been intended for the first production, but it was not ready in time, and The Strange Gentleman was substituted instead. Dickens was proud of the play, and very involved with it; he wrote gI have been superintending its preparation, morning, noon, and nighth (Pilgrim, 1:177?78). Gentleman premiered on the opening night of the St. Jamesfs Theatrefs second season (Thu 29 Sep 1836). It finished its first run with its fiftieth performance (Tue 6 Dec), sharing the Bill with the delayed debut of Coquettes. Thus Boz had two pieces running, in the same house, on the same night, at least for that one night. A great success, Gentleman continued to appear occasionally; it made its 58th appearance as part of a benefit for stage-manager Harley (Mon 13 Mar 1837). It soon opened in the Park Theatre in New York (15 Sep 1837), at the Chestnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia (29 Jan 1838), and was revived at the Olympic on Broadway (16 Dec 1839). At noted above, despite his early enthusiasm for the piece, Dickens was later to disavow the play, and (by 1843) did not wish to see it performed again. After his death, an attempt was made to revive the play, at the Charing Cross Theatre (1873), but this was soon halted by legal action from Dickensfs sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth, and from his executor John Forster?in life his closest friend. Forster wrote to a solicitor gI know that he [Dickens] more than once refused to let it be actedh (Adrian, 160). Since then, the play has been staged a few times by branches of the Dickens Fellowship (California, 1926; Toronto, 1930; St. Pancras, 1933?), local companies (Portsmouth and Cantonbury, 1970), a Dickens Festival (Staten Island, 1983), Londonfs Birkbeck College (1984), and more. The Strange Gentleman was also translated into Spanish, and El extra?o caballero was staged at the Victoria Hall Theatre, in Montevideo, Uruguay (9 May 1946), to good reviews. Dickensians are keenly interested in the authorfs apprentice work, and invariably understanding of any youthful missteps. The original cast of The Strange Gentleman, as first produced (1836), contained some notable characters. The title role was played by John Pritt Harley, who became a friend to Dickens for many years. The Village Coquettes was dedicated to Harley, and he was to be a guest at Dickensfs celebration dinners for Nicholas Nickleby (5 Oct 1839) and Master Humphreyfs Clock (20 Oct 1840). The role of Julia Dobbs was played by Madame Sala, and it was through her that Dickens met her little boy, George Augustus Sala. The same boy, as an adult, would become a major contributor to Dickensfs weekly Household Words (Sala wrote two sections of the gSeven Poor Travellersh). The sister characters in the play, Mary and Fanny Wilson, were played by real sisters, Julia and Kitty Smith; since the Wilson girls do not appear in the original sketch, the characters appear to have been added to the burletta to accommodate the Smith girls. Dickens himself is said to have once stood in as understudy for the role of Charles Tomkins. Some topical allusions in the Gentleman may require explanation. 1) The lead actor, Harley, had, in real life, left Drury Lane Theatre, one of (note) the Theatres Royal. Dickens felt that the royal theatres were producing too many ghorse spectaclesh, showy, noisy, productions, with live horses on stage. Harley had then signed on with the St. Jamesfs Theatre (15 May 1836), where Gentleman was playing. This underlies the jokes below about the (again) Royal Hotel, its noise and its horses, and also the quiet St. Jamesfs Hotel, where Harleyfs character stays. 2) As youfll read below, the Strange Gentleman gives an anonymous note to the hotel shoeshine man to deliver?and the gBootsh archly believes that, because anonymous, this is a gSwingh note. gCaptain Swingh was a pseudonym widely used by rebellious farm workers (1830 onwards), when protesting, or rioting, against poverty and the onset of farm machinery. Often they torched haystacks. One gentleman farmer received this grim Captain Swing note: gthis is to inform you what you have to undergo Gentelmen if providing you Dont pull down your messhines and rise the poor mens wages the maried men give tow and six pence a day a day the single tow shilings or we will burn down your barns and you in them this is the last notish. Another: gRevenge for thee is on the wing | from thy Determined | Capt Swingh. Dickens doesnft make any particularly clever joke about Swing, either in Gentleman, or later in Pickwick, where he makes a similar reference. Apparently just the mention of the taboo name was enough to raise a nervous giggle. Now well armed, readers are ready to approach the play proper. It is a play about confusion, and it can be confusing; you may have to read it twice. It should reward the effort. What follows below represents the first time one of Dickensfs works was dramatized, ever, as adapted by the author, himself, and is now presented here, for the first time on the open Internet, ever. He has dodged me all the way from London, and will dodge me all the way to the residence of Miss Emily Brown, whom my respected, but swine-headed parents have picked out for my future wife. A pretty figure I should cut before the old people, whom I have never beheld more than once in my life, and Miss Emily Brown, whom I have never seen at all, if I went down there, pursued by this Salamander, who, I suppose, is her accepted lover! I must undergo this fiery ordeal, and submit to be packed up, and carried back to my weeping parents, like an unfortunate buck, with a flat piece of lead in my head, and a brief epitaph on my breast, eKilled on Wednesday morning.f No, I wonft (starting up, and walking about). I wonft submit to it; Ifll accept the challenge, but first Ifll write an anonymous letter to the local authorities, giving them information of this intended duel, and desiring them to place me under immediate restraint. My character will be saved?I shall be bound over?hefll be bound over?I shall resume my journey?reach the house?marry the girl?pocket the fortune, and laugh at him. As you value human life, secure the amiable youth, without delay. Think, I implore you, sir, think what would be the feelings of those to whom he is nearest and dearest, if any mischance befall the interesting young man. Do not neglect this solemn warning; the number of his room is seventeen.f There?(folding it up). Now if I can find any one who will deliver it secretly.? Thatfs the line of argument I should take up; but that anft exactly my meaning. STRANGE GENTLEMAN. No! TOM. No. A secretfs a thing as is always a rising to onefs lips. It requires an astonishing weight to keep one on fem down. STRANGE GENTLEMAN. Ah! TOM. Yes; I donft think I could keep one snug?regflar snug, you know? STRANGE GENTLEMAN. Yes, regularly snug, of course. TOM. ?If it had a less weight a-top on it, than ten shillins. STRANGE GENTLEMAN. You donft think three half-crowns would do it? TOM. Ifll only just give these boots to the deputy, to take them to whoever they belong to, and then Ifll pitch this here letter in at the Mayorfs office-window, in no time. STRANGE GENTLEMAN. In five minutes more the letter will be delivered; in another half hour, if the Mayor does his duty, I shall be in custody, and secure from the vengeance of this infuriated monster. I wonder whether theyfll take me away? Egad! I may as well be provided with a clean shirt and a nightcap in case. Letfs see, she said the next room was my bedroom, and as I have accepted the challenge, I may venture so far now. (Shouldering the portmanteau.) What a capital notion it is; therefll be all the correspondence in large letters, in the county paper, and my name figuring away in roman capitals, with a long story, how I was such a desperate dragon, and so bent upon fighting, that it took four constables to carry me to the Mayor, and one boy to carry my hat. Afterword Did you notice that Julia mentioned gLord Peterfs negligenceh? What was that all about? According to the gGreat Winglebury Duelh: gLord Peter, who had been detained beyond his time by drinking champagne and riding a steeplechase, went back to the Honourable Augustus Flairfs, and drank more champagne, and rode another steeplechase, and was thrown and killed.h Dickens neglected to explain this, at least in the published version of the play. Reviews for The Strange Gentleman were appreciative but mixed. The News and Sunday Herald reported: gThe well-earned reputation of Mr. Charles Dickens as a sort of literary Hogarth, induced us to regard the first dramatic production of eBozf with more than ordinary interest, and we are truly happy to record the triumphant success of The Strange Gentleman as pleasant and really humorous a piece as could be well desired. A wide field is open, and Mr. Dickens will be alike regardless of his own interest and the publicfs gratification if he neglect to maintain that position to which his maiden effort so justly entitles him. Harley was the strange gentleman, and he bustled through his work as if he knew and felt that he had something better to deal with than some of the comic abortions which have been recently consigned to his charge.h The Champion wrote that the play gwas lively, certainly; but the humour throughout was not worthy the great reputation he [Dickens] had acquired. It was commonplace and Joe Millerish.h From the Satirist: gThere is certainly no want of point or cleverness in the piece, yet strange to say it did not as a whole, etellf with the audience. It is in truth clogged with matter which may be very good, and probably is so, in the very sketch, on which the drama is founded, but which somehow destroys the effect in many instances, of the dialogue. The position of the parties assembled at The St. Jamesfs Arms, is astonishingly improbable; the situations are too forced, the perplexities too prolonged, to keep up a genuine interest among an audience. eBoz,f alias Mr. C. Dickens, describes what he has seen or imagined with graphic power, and his excellence lies in dwelling on these minute points which escape common observers; but as a dramatist, he lacks the faculty of seizing on the points, and only those, which are really of interest in representation.h (See Dexter for more.) Dickens was to have two more plays produced at the St. Jamesfs Theatre: The Village Coquettes and Is She His Wife?. Neither was so successful as The Strange Gentleman.
